THE PSYOP: Episode 18 – The Art of the Steal: The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool by Donald Trump @realDonaldTrump

After the rushed 2026 renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, an algae bloom quickly turned the water green. National Park Service crews responded by pouring gallons of hydrogen peroxide (a 12% solution) directly into the pool as a gentler algaecide to oxidize and kill the algae.

However, the peroxide acted as a strong oxidizing agent that stripped and loosened the new polyurea-based “American flag blue” coating, causing large sections of the fresh blue liner to peel after 7 days, lift off the concrete, and float to the surface within days. This created both an eyesore and extra debris in the water, highlighting issues with the coating’s adhesion and the treatment’s compatibility.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., was constructed in 1922–1923 (with completion shortly after the Lincoln Memorial’s dedication in May 1922) as part of the early 20th-century redesign of the National Mall.

Designed by architect Henry Bacon (who also designed the Memorial itself), the long rectangular pool—roughly 2,030 feet by 167 feet, holding about 6.75 million gallons of water—served as a serene visual axis and “water mirror” to dramatically reflect the Lincoln Memorial and connect it symbolically to the Washington Monument farther east.

Built with an original asphalt-and-tile bottom on soft river clay (later requiring major stabilization like pilings), it was filled initially with city water from the Tidal Basin.

President Trump’s 2026 renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has cost roughly $14–16 million total (far exceeding his initial public estimates of $1.5–1.8 million, later adjusted upward to “less than $20 million”)

Most of the money went to Virginia-based contractor Atlantic Industrial Coatings LLC (~$14.2 million via a no-bid/sole-source contract citing urgency for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations in July), with an additional ~$1.7 million to Green Water Solutions for water treatment systems that didnt ‘treat’ the water. @WhiteHouse @All100Senators @All435Reps
